Orchids have always been popular but in the past very few people attempted to grow them, this was because they were considered 'difficult' to grow. The introduction of central heating, double glazing, conservatories and so on in to modern homes brought the ability to easily care for many of the worlds most beautiful orchids and get them to flower again and again to everyone. Most of the plants these days are both species and hybrids that have been mass produced using cloning techniques under laboratory conditions. This is a good thing as it results in clean, free flowering plants that are free from pests and diseases and are consistently high quality plants. You should never buy orchids that are collected from the wild as it's illegal and they may carry pests and diseases. |
