These are they classic florists orchid and naturally occurs in China, Japan and Himilaya where they have moist but cool summers. They have oval shaped pseudobulbs (like small turnips) with around 5 - 7 long sword shaped leaves coming from them. The flowering spike emerges from the base of this years completed growth (new pseudobulb) and usually reaches 18 - 24 inches long with up to 20 flowers per spike. Large plants can produce 7 or more spikes so thats some number of blooms! Once opened the flowers last for several months if the plant is kept in a bright but cool position. Getting them to re flower the following year can be tricky as they MUST have cool night time temperatures during the summer or they will not flower - in the UK you need to grow them outside in a sheltered position out of direct full sun until just before the first frost Winter minimum temperature: 50F/10C (cool) |
The current weather forecast for the week suggests clear weather so everything is going out as normal!
